Start with one small thing
One small thing for today
Pick one thing you can finish in 10 minutes, like a shower, something to eat, or a few minutes outside. That's enough for today.
Pick one person you trust and send them this. You can say more when you talk.
Hi, can we talk sometime this week? I've been having a hard time lately.
When it might be depression
Everyone has low days. It may be depression when, for two weeks or more, you feel low or empty most of the day, or lose interest in things you used to enjoy, along with some of these:
- sleeping much more or much less than usual
- eating much more or much less than usual
- feeling tired, with no energy
- finding it hard to focus or make decisions
- feeling worthless or guilty
- feeling hopeless about the future
- thoughts of death or of ending your life
Depression is common and it can be treated. A doctor, psychologist or counselor can help you work out what you need. If you're not sure where to start, call the NCMH Crisis Hotline (1553), open 24/7.
Why one small thing helps
Depression makes you wait to feel better before you do anything. Doing one small, doable thing first, like a shower or a short walk, often lifts your mood a little, and that makes the next thing easier.
Common questions

Can depression go away on its own?
It sometimes eases, but recovery is faster and more likely with help. Depression can be treated with talking therapy, and sometimes with medicine prescribed by a doctor.
